Electromagnetic methods are used when the underground utility or object is a conductor of electricity. Examples of utilities that are typically located using EM methods are power lines, communications and CATV lines, natural gas lines (provided a tracer wire is buried with the utility). A Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey can identify density contrasts or voids in the subsurface and the utility or object does not need to be a conductor of electricity. GPR is very useful for locating concrete or PVC pipes and underground storage tanks. Probe Utility Locating has very capable GPR units that can be used to perform maps and visualizations of grid-surveys of an area.
Concrete is an extremely versatile material with a wide variety of applications. The concrete structure is often reinforced with metal rebar or other structural elements. And sometimes even cables or pipes are encased in concrete. It can be a challenge to determine what’s inside concrete and drawings or plans rarely exist.
Probe Utility Locating has the latest equipment for nondestructive assessments of concrete walls, floors, ceilings or other elements such as columns. Our high-frequency GPR concrete scanners enable us to produce a very detailed visual representation of the structural elements inside concrete. 3D models can be created within minutes and directly on the jobsite. This allows us to assess the type, density, orientation, and depth of rebar and utilities inside concrete, as well as the overall thickness.

Vacuum excavation, also referred to as soft-dig or air-knife, is one of the safest methods to dig. The principle is simple: A high-powered stream of air or water pressure is used to loosen the soil. The loose soil is then removed with a vacuum hose. Vacuum excavation can be used to daylight underground utilities for surveying, engineering, and maintenance purposes. Probe Utility Locating was founded in 2004 out of a need for accurate underground utility locates that are provided in a timely manner. Initially, the company primarily served the environmental consulting industry but soon expanded to work for a wide range of subsurface investigation and construction contractors.
